It is claimed that you could become a villain , or a hero. Today, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain once again, this time with Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. The villain is strong, and the story is true to the comic book storyline as well as bringing back the fan-favorite character, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Then there’s the quirky humour unique to director Taika Waititi. Love and Thunder is a standalone film that does not match the quality of Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over 10 years, however his solo films have either missed the mark completely or missed the target. While the story of the origins of Thor (2011) was a decent start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was terrible entry. Yet, any list of the top five MCU films should contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) absolutely. The Reunion of the Hemsworth and Waititi collaboration brought expectations at an all-time high ahead of the film’s release.
When Gorr (Bale) and Bale, who seeks the extinction of gods after being disappointed by one, decides on attacking New Asgard to steal the Stormbreaker, Thor has to stop the god killer by forming a team with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who has transformed into Mighty Thor. The story is straightforward, unlike the Marvel films of recent times and the performances are good in this film. Hemsworth aces the titular character who is going through having a midlife crisis. However, Bale and Portman are the most notable. As evidence of Bale’s abilities, the pre-title credit scene appears. Gorr could be the next Thanos in the MCU. Bale adds a an eerie quality to the character , but it’s not much more than that.
Portman plays Mjolnir’s cancerous ex-girlfriend. With the way Marvel is keen on handing over the mantles of Hawkeye and, in the next few months, Hulk, to women characters, I first expected that the Mighty Thor to be a comparable tick on the checklist of representation. But the film does build an emotional backstory for this astrophysicist who gets to showcase her biceps in more than one scene.
Marvel also performs its own stretching out in all its appearances. We also get to see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast which includes Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprise their roles from Thor Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor in turn. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also known as Hela and the director for an Asgardian play. Waititi is the director who, has been directing since Ragnarok has directed the Oscar-winning-Jojo Rabbit, operates in his genre of choice once more. It’s amusing to see an image of a pair of noisy goats and Korg’s narration of Thor’s story. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie becomes Old Spice’s ambassador.
The premise is that Thor wants to find his Mjolnir but is scared of the jealousy of Stormbreaker. These gags are effective but they come at the cost of intense emotion. They also reveal the superficial plot. Thor: Love and Thunder deals with a variety of love, ranging from a father-daughter relationship to the complicated romance of estranged lovers… There’s parallels between Gorr losing his faith in the god he worships, Rapu, and Thor getting disillusioned by Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). These are just a few of the ideas but…
There are many movie references like Harry Potter and Interstellar, in addition to easter eggs. A picture of Falligar, the dead god can be seen, directly from comic books. We see Hemsworth wearing the original Thor costume that comic book lovers will recognize. When Thor bares it all during a fight with Zeus We see a tattoo that says “RIP Loki The trickster’s helmet etched on Thor’s back. The villainous Necrosword is revealed and it’s interesting to see how other weapons are revealed as being able to control individuals, considering the way Stormbreaker and Mjolnir appear to have their own minds.
We saw this using Shang Chi’s ten ring as well as Ms. Marvel’s magical Bangle, and the Ebony blade in the Eternals post-credits scene. The quote “Gods do not empower you however, they will utilize the power of God to help you” from Marvel’s newest show, Moonknight, feels very familiar. There’s even a story of Valkyrie lost her beloved love during war, and Korg falling in love another Kronan man.
The first half reminds us of all the colors we loved in Ragnarok The majority of the second half is set in a dark realm where everything is in black and white. The fact remains that the action scenes shot in monochrome are very enjoyable.
Hemsworth as Thor will be here for a long time for the foreseeable future, and it’s a relief to MCU fans who’ve seen the first Avengers or sacrifice their lives, or hang up their heads.
